First Pedal Toward Change: Sarón–Puente Viesgo Route Launches BICYCLE Volunteering Programme

With great enthusiasm, we’ve launched the Volunteering Programme of the BICYCLE project by organizing our first cycling route between Sarón and Puente Viesgo, two towns in the heart of Cantabria, Spain. This activity marked the beginning of a series of local actions aimed at promoting active mobility, environmental awareness, and community engagement through the bicycle.

The Volunteering Programme is designed to empower young people by involving them directly in the design and implementation of cycling routes in their own territories. Each route is an opportunity to explore their surroundings, identify mobility challenges, and advocate for greener, more inclusive alternatives. Volunteers also play a key role in raising awareness about sustainable transportation and sharing local histories and ecological insights along the way.

The Sarón–Puente Viesgo ride covered scenic rural paths, inviting participants to reflect on the importance of reconnecting with nature while advocating for better cycling infrastructure and accessibility. Along the route, the group documented observations, conducted informal interviews with locals, and shared ideas for improving connectivity between rural communities.

This first route was not only a physical journey, but also a symbolic step in reclaiming public space and imagining a future where cycling is central to daily life, social inclusion, and civic participation.
